The importance of design in our profession determines the effectiveness in the learning process. Common sense in the teaching procedure affects our teacher profession and our learning goals. The article highlights the meaning of understanding why teachers have to design before to teach. First teachers must know that they cannot teach anything we have to follow standards that indicate what students should know and what they are able to do. Before to choose what methods and material we are going to use we have to keep in mind this important questions what students should understand? Thought out good design teachers can achieve their own goals and students goals. Another important factor that influences the effectiveness of our lesson has to do with the variety of students. It is very important to consider students needs, then we can determine our learning priorities. In addition is fundamental that teachers understand good design is fundamental for the learning process of our students. Teachers have to understand that we have to focus on assess before to chose the topic or the material. Good design implies understanding by teachers and students. Consequently teachers and students understand their duties in the learning process.
Wiggins describe three main steps in the assessing process. He says that teachers must focus on desired results then we can start with the first step, which is clarify the priorities of learning and we have to consider all the variables (students needs, students differences, etc) that give shape to our design. The priorities must be based on the curriculum expectations, this means what content is worthy for students. The second stage refers to acceptable evidence of students, teachers need evidence of understanding of students and we have to vary our methods of getting acceptable evidence. As much evidence a teacher gets as more acceptable and reliable evidence. In this stage teachers have to collect assessment evidence through different types of assessing like quizzes, projects, test, etc. So teachers have to concentrate on what criteria we have to use in the judgment of the students’ performance. Finally the third step is time for students to rethink and revise their understanding. This step is fundamental for the learning process of the students and teacher performance of teachers. Teachers and students reflect on improve their performances. The teacher focus on improve students’ learning and understanding. Also the teacher reflects on his or her performance obligations in order to achieved students goals.
Finally it is fundamental to tell that this article tries very hard to encourage teacher to produce their own creative activities. We have to use the text book as a primary tool but it is not the lesson. In my working experience I have seen many times that the book is the lesson. Students see there is no any design in their lessons, they do not understand what and why they have to learn those topics. In addition Students do not feel any stimulation for the subject. The fault is the lack of understanding by the two protagonist, teacher and student do not know their goals. Finally class work become in useless activities and the teacher looses credibility. We are assessors that we have to help to our students to become in creative, intelligent and critical thinkers. Organization is very important for our profession we have to organize, design and understand our duties as a teacher. If we comprehend all these elements our students will understand too and effective learning will be something natural and harmonic.

Finally a chapter of Wiggins talks about the English text book. I totally agree with the fact that text books are not the essential thing in a English class. The text book is a complementary source of the class but it is not the bible of the course.
ResponderEliminarIt is important to have a variety of resources to teach apart from texts books. Teachers should use their creativity to design a lesson connected to the objective of the class.
ResponderEliminarTeachers may have lots of good and different resources, but they have to be aware on how helpful they can be for the lesson, and of course, if the apply to the content he/she wants to give according to the desired learnings.
ResponderEliminarI agree that the design should considered students' differences. To consider students' needs as our priority on teaching appears to be a very interesting idea.
ResponderEliminarthe question for this chapter is what a good design is? and the answer is developed by telling us that we have to take in consideration three different stages when we design a test. For the reason that we are looking forward to finding reliable evidence to work with.
ResponderEliminarTeachers have to use the book to have an order in classes but it is not the bible that you have to follow. Moreover, it is a good complement to plan classes but sometimes it contains many topics which are absolutely disconnected with students' interests.
ResponderEliminarI agree that the priorities should be based on the curriculum expectations, because a teacher with expectations and a previous plan could always develop a lesson with meaningful results.
