Understand the understanding is fundamental for everyone. Understanding seems complex but necessary. Every normal person can learn something but understanding is totally different.
First it is necessary to understand the difference between understanding and knowledge. A person can know something but understand goes beyond that. So Understanding is the second step of knowing something. This step is the ability to connect the learning in multiple situations. Also the learner must show evidence of his or her learning and to do specific things with the knowledge. Then the knowledge is meaningful for the student and he or she can read between the lines. This expression means the learner finally can infer information. As a result the learner can create new information and uses it for different purposes.
As a teacher the challenge is help students through different tools to construct student’s understanding. However many teachers believe that knowledge is enough and they do not give the right tools for the real enlighten.
The evidence of understanding is fundamental. For this reason assess is needed but the assessment must be valid. First teachers have to know very well what specific things student must do with the new knowledge. Then the teacher creates a standard test and students got a specific figure. The figure shows the degree of understanding’s level of the student.
To sum up the understanding process is very important in people lives. The understanding is applied in multiple situations in an effective way. Human beings who really understand the understanding build up efficient ways of resolving problems, developing strategies and they become in critical thinkers. So as future teacher energies must be focus in the importance of the student understands and give meaning to the knowledge. Meaningful knowledge means knowledge with a purpose in the real world. So knowledge becomes useful and the understanding grows up in student’s mind.

I totally agree with Maria Jose about the idea that teachers do not understand the real concept about understanding and they do not give the necessary tools. This big issue in education is like a vicious circle because they can not apply new tools if they do not even understand what really understanding implies.
ResponderEliminarI know that teachers make mistakes when they assess because they do not put the limit between understandig and knowledge. Teachers should evaluate students' performance more than just knowledge.
ResponderEliminarWith the explanation that you give about knowledge and understanding, I see why this goes beyond that. I agree with you when you say in your last paragraph that "Human beings who really understand the understanding build up efficient ways of resolving problems, developing strategies and they become in critical thinkers." I also think that is true, people who are able to put into practice what they have learned or can explain it, are more able to solve problems and finding meaning to the abstract.
ResponderEliminarI completely agree with you when saying that teachers think it is enough to have knowledge. as you know, this situation happens in every school, my question is: when do you think it is gonna finish?
ResponderEliminarIn fact, every person can learn something but he understands it different from others. The idea that teachers focus more on knowledge that understanding has to do with what you are going to assess when you assess. Are you going to assess knowledge or skill performances ? This has to do with having planned what the objectives are. Then, you just figure out how to follow each step.
ResponderEliminarI totally agree with you when you say that this is a process where the teacher has to facilitate the understanding, because the understanding then is applied in different aspect of life.
ResponderEliminarIt is true that someone can know something but understanding is totally different and more important. Teachers have to know that difference to help students in the learning process to make it more effective.
ResponderEliminarI agree with you when the information is meaningful the result is that the learner can create new information and uses it for different purposes.Do you think teachers have as purpose the idea that students can reuse the info and create new knowledge?
